“I’m Sorry, What Did You Say?”
I really spent this whole week confirming who would be attending our IEP and finalizing recommendations by all of Yester’s therapist. It’s important that all of us are on the same page. As I’ve been home re-reading ALL of Aiden’s assessments it occurred to me that some assessments hadn’t been done.
On Friday, I met with our speech therapist who was very eager to sit me down and go over his most recent assessment. It went something like this….
Speech Therapist: “Tommara, I was looking at Yester’s scores and I think they are VERY interesting.”
Me: (nervous) Oooo, Kay….
Speech Therapist: “Look at this graph, this is where Yester was in March. You can see how below the Mean/Average line he is. Now, look at the one we just did in July…..”
Me: “Are you kidding me?”
BLAH, BLAH, BLAH….
Yester’s scores put him in the 90-95% in receptive language and vocabulary. He is within the MEAN, above 85% in expressive language, making him age appropriate in speech and language!!
I was concerned about his sentence breakdown. Meaning, when he is trying to put together a sentence you get the first 4 words then it turns into baby talk and then you get the last 2-3 words. “Very age appropriate,”said his speech therapist. She explained what’s great about Yester is that I can understand him 80-85% of the time and a stranger can understand him about 60% of the time and that, is age appropriate.
To ensure that we don’t have any regression and to increase his speech and language scores more, he is still behind in conversation skills.
Her recommendation for him is going to be two 20 minute sessions a week of group therapy to help with socialization and conversation skills.
Speech Therapist: “Yester NO longer needs 1 on 1 speech therapy.”
Me: “I’m sorry, what did you say?”
BLAH, BLAH, BLAH….
WE COULDN’T BE MORE EXCITED!!
